It’s being reported right now that a Top Republican in the Senate says nominating Rep. Matt Gaetz to be Attorney General would be a big mistake because he wouldn’t have the votes to get confirmed.
This Republican says “a lot of us hope the President-Elect reconsiders” the nomination.
“Top Senate Republican who has the pulse of the GOP Conference:
“Many of President Trump’s selections so far have been just what the American people asked for. But nominating Matt Gaetz to be Attorney General would be a significant mistake because he will not have the votes to be confirmed. It’s clear a lot of us hope the President-Elect reconsiders.””
I would hate to see a Trump pick fail the Senate confirmation process but unless he reverses course, that’s probably what’s going to happen. Seriously, there’s no way Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski are going to vote for Gaetz. That’s just two and there are plenty of other weak-kneed Republicans in the Senate who will also refuse, namely John Cornyn and John Thune. I just don’t see how this gets through.
