NextImg:Family flees Minneapolis following multiple shootings at apartment building within 48 hours — just days after moving in

A California mother said there is no way she can go back to Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a series of shootings at her apartment building happened within just a couple of days. The mother had yet to finish unpacking the boxes from the family's move just a few days earlier.

A man died following a shooting in the Uptown Minneapolis neighborhood at 29th Street West and Fremont Avenue South; bullets struck cars, buildings, and the apartment the mother was living in.

After the death of the 21-year-old man in the first shooting, the community decided to hold a vigil for the victim. It was during the vigil when another shooting reportedly happened, according to KTSP-TV. Bullets damaged buildings and cars, while two women were hurt by broken glass.

The mother, Lucretia, whose last name was withheld, said a bullet shattered the glass on her apartment porch door while her young son was having a bath. The son was not harmed, but glass from the broken door fell on the woman.

“We both could have been hit by a situation we had nothing to do with. Literally nothing to do with, innocent bystanders,” she said. “There’s no way I can go back. There’s no way I’d ever feel safe in that area to even go back,”

A local report noted that the crime scene consisted of more than 70 pieces of evidence, including bullet holes in the side of the apartment building.

With boxes still unpacked from their recent move from California, Lucretia decided it wasn't safe to stay in the location.

“The movers came maybe three or four days ago. Plenty of stuff in boxes on the floor, never got a chance to unpack, and this happened,” she explained. “I grabbed our suitcases that we had packed from our flights here. I’m like, ‘Let’s go.’”

Not only were the boxes still packed, they were also wet from water that leaked into her apartment. Police reported that a stray bullet hit a sprinkler in the apartment building, causing it to go off.

“It’s not as safe as I was expecting, especially as a single mother of a young son.”

Police plan on deploying "specialty units" to the Minneapolis neighborhood to deter future crime.

The vice chairwoman of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party in Minnesota was recently carjacked in front of her children in Minneapolis.

The politician demanded that criminal penalties be increased in order to deter violent crimes despite previously having called to "dismantle" the police.
