Al Gore recently attended the Bloomberg Green at COP28 event. During his speaking engagement, he started talking about the dangers of social media. While there’s no doubt that social media certainly has its downsides and hazards, Gore’s speech took a weird turn.
“Social media [is] dominated by algorithms that pull people down these rabbit holes,” he began. “Algorithms – they are the digital equivalent of AR-15s. They ought to be banned.”
“What's at the bottom of the rabbit hole ... the echo chamber,” he said, continuing his absurd metaphor. “If you spend too much time in the echo chamber, what’s weaponized is another form of AI – not artificial intelligence, artificial insanity.”
“QAnon is just the best-known version of artificial insanity. These devices are the enemies of self-government, and they're the enemies of democracy; we need reforms for both democracy and capitalism,” Gore continued.
Pat Gray can’t help but laugh. “We don't have to worry about democracy because we don't have one.”
“We don’t have capitalism either,” adds Keith Malinak.
“These guys are just pathetic,” sighs Pat.
