The White House Correspondents Association canceled plans to have anti-Trump comedian Amber Ruffin host its annual dinner next month, citing a desire not to focus on the “politics of division.”
WHCA President Eugene Daniels sent a letter to members on Saturday saying the group’s board had unanimously decided to no longer feature a comedic performance for its April 26 dinner.
“At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists,” Daniels wrote.
Ruffin’s hosting gig was reportedly canceled after White House Deputy Chief of Staff Taylor Budowich voiced concerns about her past rhetoric around President Trump.
Just last month, Ruffin said “nobody wants” Trump to attend the dinner and on Friday she told the Daily Beast she wanted to call the Trump administration a “bunch of murderers” but was being asked to tone down her material.
Budowich shared a clip of Ruffin on X and wrote, “This year’s WHCA dinner will be hosted by a 2nd rate comedian who is previewing the event by calling this administration ‘murderers’ who want to ‘feel like human beings, but they shouldn’t get to feel that way, because you’re not.’”
“What kind of responsible, sensible journalist would attend something like this? More importantly, what kind of company would sponsor such as hate-filled and violence-inspiring event?” Budowich added.
Trump chose not to attend the annual dinner during his first four years in office and is unlikely to appear at next month’s event.
Budowich later responded to the WHCA’s decision to pull Ruffin by saying, “No accountability at [WHCA] just a cop out statement—pathetic!”
The Trump administration has had a fraught relationship with the WHCA, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announcing last month that the White House would take over the pool reporter rotation, which had historically been managed by the correspondents association.
The White House also banned the Associated Press from the press pool over its refusal to refer to the “Gulf of Mexico” as the “Gulf of America,” after Trump issued an executive order changing its name.
