President-elect Donald Trump said the U.S. should not get involved in fighting in Syria after rebel forces advanced toward the capital city of Damascus on Saturday.

“Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

The U.S. has 900 troops stationed in the northeast territory in an effort to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.

While Trump announced in 2019 that he wanted to withdraw those troops because he claimed the Islamic State was near defeat, he ultimately chose not to do so, heeding the warnings of his advisers that such a move would create an opportunity for Iran and Russia to fill the void.

The former and future president said Russia now “seems incapable of stopping this literal march through Syria, a country they have protected for years” because of the Kremlin’s focus on its own conflict in Ukraine.

But Trump suggested it “may actually be the best thing that can happen to them” if Russia is forced out of Syria because there was “never much of a benefit” there for Russia.

One day earlier, the U.S. Embassy in Syria warned Americans to leave the region. The rebels, led by terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, are hoping to force longtime Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad out of office.

The resistance forces set their sights on the capital city after having successfully taken the city of Aleppo, grounding flights out of its international airport. As of Saturday morning, insurgent forces had reached the city of Homs, which sits just 100 miles from Damascus.
