President Donald Trump is calling for Senator Adam Schiff (D., Calif.) to face consequences for alleged mortgage fraud related to his Maryland home.
“I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist. And now I learn that Fannie Mae’s Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud,” Trump posted on Truth Social Tuesday.
“Adam Schiff said that his primary residence was in MARYLAND to get a cheaper mortgage and rip off America, when he must LIVE in CALIFORNIA because he was a Congressman from CALIFORNIA. I always knew Adam Schiff was a Crook. The FRAUD began with the refinance of his Maryland property on February 6, 2009, and continued through multiple transactions until the Maryland property was correctly designated as a second home on October 13, 2020,” Trump added.
Trump believes Schiff must be “brought to justice” for the alleged mortgage fraud, possibly hinting at a criminal investigation to come. The Federal Housing Finance Agency, the regulator of Fannie Mae, sent a criminal referral to the Justice Department seeking further investigation into Schiff’s Maryland home, according to the New York Post.
A longtime political opponent of Trump, Schiff rose to prominence for using his position on the House Intelligence Committee to promote false claims of collusion between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. House Republicans booted Schiff from the Intelligence Committee in 2023 for using the panel to peddle falsehoods about Trump and the Russians.
Schiff also led Trump’s first impeachment in 2020 for attempting to pressure Ukraine into investigating the Biden family’s foreign business dealings. His anti-Trump antics propelled him to Democratic stardom and ultimately helped Schiff win California’s open Senate seat last year following the death of longtime Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein in 2023.
Reacting on X, Schiff dismissed Trump’s allegations and mocked him for the ongoing controversy surrounding the Trump administration’s handling of documents related to deceased sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
“Since I led his first impeachment, Trump has repeatedly called for me to be arrested for treason. So in a way, I guess this is a bit of a letdown. And this baseless attempt at political retribution won’t stop me from holding him accountable. Not by a long shot,” Schiff posted.
“This is just Donald Trump’s latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies. So it is not a surprise, only how weak this false allegation turns out to be. And much as Trump may hope, this smear will not distract from his Epstein files problem.”
CNN previously reported that Schiff spends most of his time in Maryland, yet receives a property tax break for claiming his primary residence to be a smaller, hardly-used home he owns in California.
The mortgage fraud allegations against Schiff are similar to those the Trump administration brought against New York Attorney General Letitita James (D) related to a home she owns in Virginia. James, who is currently under FBI investigation, is another prominent anti-Trump lawmaker best known for using her office to go after him.
