President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with a blood circulation condition after undergoing a medical examination due to swelling in his lower legs, the White House announced Thursday.
Trump is suffering from chronic venous insufficiency, a condition where the leg veins get damaged and struggle to send blood back to the heart.
“In recent weeks, President Trump noted mild swelling in his lower legs, in keeping with routine medical care, and out of an abundance of caution, this concern was thoroughly evaluated by the White House medical unit,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
“The president underwent a comprehensive examination, including diagnostic vascular studies, bilateral lower extremity, venous doppler ultrasounds were performed and revealed chronic venous insufficiency… a common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of 70,” she added.
The White House revealed Trump’s condition in response to speculation about bruising on Trump’s hands, which the administration attributed to frequent handshakes and Trump’s use of aspirin to promote heart health.
Images of Trump’s hands circulated on social media earlier this week, leading to questions about what caused the bruising. Trump typically greets world leaders and political allies with lengthy, assertive handshakes.
Leavitt said Trump, 79, remains in “excellent health” and did not show no signs of heart failure or any deeper illnesses. It is unclear what treatment Trump will receive for chronic venous insufficiency. Trump maintains an extremely active schedule and remains the most prominent figure in American public life as he serves his second term.
The Trump administration’s disclosure of his condition contrasts sharply with his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, whose “aggressive” form of prostate cancer was only diagnosed after he left office.
During his presidency, Biden’s worsening mental acuity became the subject of ongoing scandal and eventually tanked his political career after his disastrous debate performance in June 2024. Trump and Biden were the oldest presidents in American history at the start of their respective terms.
Biden’s age-related mental struggles and the deaths of multiple congressional Democrats in recent months have brought increased scrutiny to America’s aging cohort of politicians and how they are being managed.
Trump has ordered the Justice Department to investigate the extent to which Biden’s close aides covered up his mental condition from the American public. Congressional Republicans have launched several probes into Biden’s mental decline, with the House Oversight Committee’s investigation being the highest-profile of them.
