Since reclaiming a majority in January, House Republicans have released a steady stream of evidence that is, slowly but surely, washing away President Biden’s carefully crafted image as a middle-class everyman.
With each passing week, the American people are being made aware of the breathtaking scope and scale of the foreign influence-peddling scheme that was being run by Joe’s son while he was vice president. At least those Americans who want to know. Our current webathon is dedicated to that group, those who want to understand how deep the corruption goes instead of burying their heads in the sand.
It is quite possible, in our siloed media environment, to spare oneself from confronting the depressing reality that the Biden family has enriched itself to the tune of tens of millions of dollars over just the last decade without offering a discernible product or service of any kind — save for access to the precipice of American political power.
If confined to the major newspapers and left-wing cable channels, it’s possible to come away with the impression that Joe’s troubled son may have gotten involved in some shady overseas business dealings while down on his luck, but that all of that business happened far away from his father, an Amtrak-riding man of unimpeachable integrity.
If instead you read National Review’s news coverage of the House Oversight investigation, you’ll be confronted with the evidence.
You’ll read that the Biden family constructed a complex web of shell companies to accept millions of dollars from foreign sources while Joe was serving as vice president.
You’ll find out that Hunter’s business partner, Devon Archer, testified that he and Hunter traveled the world selling the “Biden brand.” You’ll learn that, as proof of the access they could provide to the “Biden brand,” they arranged dinners and phone calls so that their business partners, all of whom needed help getting things done in Washington, could speak to Joe Biden himself.
And you’ll learn that a trusted FBI source, someone who had been on the bureau payroll for years thanks to his record of providing reliable information, told the FBI that Hunter and Joe Biden were paid $5 million each by Burisma, the Ukrainian energy company whose board Hunter sat on, in exchange for protecting the company from anti-corruption investigations that were then underway.
But with all of that smoke, a skeptic might ask, where are the charges?
It’s impossible to say for sure, but, if the IRS whistleblowers who testified publicly before Congress earlier this year are to be believed, Department of Justice prosecutors stifled the investigation into Hunter’s finances, preventing it from reaching Joe himself and ensuring that the statute of limitations would run on the more serious charges facing Hunter.
If you read NR’s news coverage regularly, you’ll know who I’m referring to when I write “IRS whistleblowers,” but if not, you might be confused, given that their public testimony was almost entirely ignored by the Washington Post and New York Times.
If you want to make sense of our current political reality, in all its sordid and corrupt detail, please consider contributing to our webathon, which will allow our news desk and others to continue this invaluable work.
