As you might have noticed, President Trump’s Truth Social posts aren’t always the kind of communications you’d expect from a president of the United States. But surely all Americans and Canadians of goodwill can, at this time of heightened tensions between our neighboring but estranged countries, get behind his out-of-the-blue tribute to Wayne Gretzky (the president generously gives him a free pass to be pro-Canadian).

Trump calls Gretzky the greatest Canadian, and who can disagree? He’s simply the best hockey player there’s ever been — he has had nine of the top eleven scoring seasons (with more than 200 points in four of them); holds the single-season goals record (92); and had an unfathomable 163 assists one year. Even in decline when he played three seasons with the Rangers at the end of his career, he led the league in assists for two of them.

Truly, the greatest — and perhaps, if things reach a crisis point, a worthy special envoy to the United States.
