A new report by Clifford Smith of the Middle East Forum details how World Vision International, one of the world’s largest evangelical humanitarian aid organizations, has been aiding Islamist terrorists and working to undermine Israel for the last 40 years.
For decades, the organization has faced criticism for its anti-Israel bias in efforts to “promote peace” in the region. It began in 1982 when World Vision criticized Israel’s actions in the Lebanon War. Stanley Mooneyham, World Vision’s president at the time, grotesquely compared the Israel Defense Forces to the Nazis, as Smith’s report notes. Since then, the charity’s criticisms of the Jewish state have continued in a similar vein.
In June 2016, Muhammad Halabi, who managed World Vision’s activities in Gaza, was detained by Israeli authorities at the Erez border crossing and accused of transferring funds to Hamas. He was recently convicted and sentenced to prison. World Vision continued to support Halabi and blamed the supposed anti-Arab bias of the Israeli justice system for his prosecution.
In 2019, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee began investigating World Vision because of allegations that the group had intentionally partnered with the Islamic Relief Agency (ISRA), which is listed by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) as a sanctioned entity because of its ties to terrorist groups. The committee’s report, issued in December 2020, concluded that monetary contributions made to World Vision ended up aiding terrorist activities.
Christian donors to World Vision should be aware of its biases and seek assurances as to where their money is going.
