Vice President JD Vance will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday at the Munich Security Conference, a source familiar with the matter confirms to National Review.

The high-profile meeting comes amid the White House’s continuing efforts to negotiate an end to the country’s three-year war with Russia and will take place days after Vance made his international debut in a speech Tuesday before the Global AI Action Summit in Paris, co-hosted by France and India.

“The United States of America is the leader in AI, and our administration plans to keep that,” Vance said in his remarks, which also urged world leaders against overregulation and political bias in the artificial-intelligence space. “The Trump administration will ensure that the most powerful AI systems are built in the U.S. with American design and manufactured chips.”

The vice president’s White House portfolio continues to take shape roughly three weeks into Trump’s second term. After serving as the GOP ticket’s policy attack dog on the 2024 campaign trail, Vance has quickly emerged as a key power broker on Capitol Hill, serving as a liaison of sorts between the White House and GOP senators long considered swing votes on the president’s most controversial nominees.

Vance’s Friday meeting with Zelensky comes as the White House continues to signal an eagerness to bring the conflict to an end. President Donald Trump confirmed to the New York Post over the weekend that he has spoken recently with Russian President Vladimir Putin about negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, and the White House announced on Tuesday that Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, was leaving Russian airspace with American detainee Marc Fogel, a teacher who had been detained in Russia since 2021.

In a statement, the administration hailed Fogel’s release “as a show of good faith from the Russians and a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine.”

Trump is also dispatching Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to Ukraine to meet with Zelensky, though he declined to specify when their meeting with occur. “This War MUST and WILL END SOON — Too much Death and Destruction,” the president wrote in a Truth Social post on Tuesday announcing the news. “The U.S. has spent BILLIONS of Dollars Globally, with little to show. WHEN AMERICA IS STRONG, THE WORLD IS AT PEACE.”
