Today’s the big day: The supreme court election in Wisconsin has the potential to give progressive activists a 4–3 majority on the state’s high court, and Janet Protasiewicz, the progressive Milwaukee judge on the ballot today, has left little to the imagination about what progressives would do with that majority. Protasiewicz has called state’s successful public-sector union reform signed into law by Scott Walker in 2011 (and the subject of several contested elections) unconstitutional; she has blanketed the airwaves with ads touting her support of a right to abortion; and she has called the state’s legislative maps “rigged” and predicted that the court will revisit a case about the legislative maps if she is elected. More than $45 million has been spent on the race — three times the previous record for campaign spending in any supreme court election in the country.
