NextImg:The Corner: Unofficial Excerpts from Kamala Harris’s Comeback Speech

An event to be missed.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to return to the national spotlight this week. She’s scheduled to make a major address for the first time since losing the presidential contest last November.

According to The Hills reporting, Harris “is expected to offer pointed criticism of the administration.” Indeed, the former presidential candidate will “issue a call to action to combat Trump’s economic policies and his push to overhaul the federal government.”

We got our hands on some excerpts from Harris’s speech, and it is as spicy as that report foreshadowed:

Over the past 100 days, we’ve witnessed the president make many decisions. And those decisions have been decisive.

Within the context of trade, and when we think about trade, we should remember that trade is merely the exchange of goods and services for money, or perhaps for other goods and services. You cannot have “exchange” without “change,” and that’s what Americans need right now: change!

Trump promised to root out corruption. But he is the root of that corruption, and you can’t root out yourself!

In packing his administration with billionaires, lobbyists, and industry insiders, the president has shown that he cares only about enriching himself and his cronies.

We called that “oligarchy” way before AOC and Bernie Sanders. [Pause to laugh for no reason] Remember that? When Joe Biden devoted his outgoing address to oligarchy? . . . No?

Let’s talk about Ukraine. That is a country in Europe. Now, let’s talk about another country in Europe: Russia. Russia is bigger than Ukraine, and it has invaded Ukraine twice — never mind when or the presidents who were in office at the time.

In our administration, Joe and I provided Ukraine with everything it asked for — eventually, and only after prudently concerning ourselves with Putin’s response to our actions for months on end. That was the kind of wise deference to Russian interests that Trump lacks. His deference to Russian interests is the bad kind.

When it comes to Trump’s deportations, we’ve never seen the sort of lawlessness in which this administration is engaged. Never before has a president displayed such contempt for the law or the courts.

This administration’s conduct is nothing at all like our effort to provide much-needed relief to students buried under a mountain of debt, renters who feared eviction for the simple act of not paying their landlords, or even to avoid enforcing immigration law. Our motives were good. Their motives are bad. Even a child can see the difference. [Laugh awkwardly]

Donald Trump’s first 100 days have made one thing very clear: This is a time of crisis for America. There is great significance to time, and even greater significance to crisis. To resolve a crisis, it takes time. And Trump has already taken too much from all of us, and not just in terms of time.

I hope you’ll stand with me, America, in taking back our time. There is no time to lose.

Harris will deliver her comeback speech as the keynote speaker for Wednesday’s Emerge gala. It’s sure to be an event worth missing.
