Two people have been charged for their role in the Chinese government-run police station that operated out of a Lower Manhattan office space, according to court documents. The New York Times reported that they were arrested early on Monday.

The two defendants in the case are Lu Jianwang, who also goes by Harry Lu, and Chen Jinping, and federal prosecutors have charged both of them with acting as unregistered agents of the Chinese government and obstruction of justice. The New York Times identified Lu as a former president of the America ChangLe Association — a pro-Beijing civic group that allegedly hosted the police outpost.

In particular, the criminal complaint alleges that Lu worked with the Chinese government to organize counter-protests against members of a religious minority in Washington, D.C., and that Lu, Chen, and others operated the “unofficial police station” in New York, destroying documents when they became aware of an FBI investigation into their activities.

The police station was established in early 2022, and the State Department said earlier this year that it had closed.

Federal prosecutors are holding a press conference this afternoon to discuss three recent cases.
