NextImg:The Corner: Trump Makes His First Moves

Today on The Editors, Rich is joined by Charlie, Michael, and Jim to discuss the first round of potential Trump appointments.

Jim is “thrilled” about reports of Marco Rubio for secretary of state, saying “it’s good to see him in what looks like a phenomenal role for him to play in shaping the foreign policy of the second term of Trump.”

A cautious MBD replies that he “would be thrilled . . . if his project were to be set about, you know, helping countries in South America to decouple from China in kind of a modern application of the Monroe Doctrine. To me, that’s a pure win. But we’ll see. These are very, very early days. And we’re still waiting for confirmation of some of these names. And they’re going to be augmented by other people. . . . And some of the deputy positions are going to matter too.”

“I think all the picks — with the exception of Kristi Noem [for Homeland Security secretary], who I don’t think is up to the job — have been excellent,” says Charlie. “I was not especially worried about his picks in part . . . because of the existence of the U.S. Senate, but also because of the people around Trump. Now, Trump is mercurial. And we may yet see that play out. The one role I’m worried about is the AG. But he’s not isolated.”
