NextImg:The Corner: There’s No Party of the Rich or the Poor

Politicians commonly say that they’re looking out for the little guy and the other party is bought off by the rich. They also always claim to be for the middle class. Both Republicans and Democrats use this style of messaging when it suits them.

Yet, looking at the exit polls from yesterday, there was very little difference in vote preference by income. Here’s NBC News’s exit poll by family income:

That’s probably not what you’d expect if you believed that Democrats are the party of the poor and Republicans are the party of the rich, or that Republicans are the party of the working class and Democrats are the party of the elites.

The poorest voters narrowly favor Democrats, but the next income level above them is the most Republican of the five. Voting preference is nearly identical for the lowest income group and the highest income group.

It’s quite remarkable that despite all the talk of polarization, American politics is structured in such a way that there really isn’t a party for the rich or a party for the poor.
