[Pope] Francis cautioned against reading his criticism of the world economy too broadly. “I do not condemn capitalism in the way some attribute to me,” he said in 2023. “Nor am I against the market.” He said that producing wealth for the good of all is an act of justice. When Jesus said “blessed are the poor in spirit,” Francis added, he was referring to those without attachments to material goods.
