If you enjoyed last night’s energetic debate between Governors DeSantis and Newsom, you will be disappointed to know that when it comes to debates, the 2024 campaign season looks to be a bust so far.
Frontrunners Joe Biden and Donald Trump are avoiding any debates, and the Republican National Committee has blocked any GOP candidates from participating in debates that haven’t been approved by it. So far, there have been only three GOP debates, and none are scheduled after next week’s in Alabama. In 2016, the party hosted a total of twelve debates, and there were even more held in 2012 and 2008.
That’s why it’s good news that next week, the RNC will explore dropping its exclusivity clause. That could mean a debate before the crucial Iowa caucuses in January as well as the run-ups to the New Hampshire and South Carolina primaries.
With the stakes as big as they are in 2024, it can only help if voters receive more information rather than less.
