NextImg:The Corner: The Only Way for Joe to Go

As I’ve said before, I don’t think Joe Biden is going anywhere unless his health makes remaining in the presidency completely unsustainable.

It’s easy to forget, given his doddering state, that he is president of the United States and therefore has the vast self-regard that comes with that position. He’s going to be the last person who thinks he’s not up for it.

Also, as Jonathan Martin pointed out in his latest column, Democrats aren’t going to push him out for a lot of reasons, including — this can also be hard to believe — they like him.

But if Biden was going to do it, I think the only way for him to go would be to resign the presidency immediately and hand it over to Kamala Harris — no fuss, no muss. If Biden was pushed out via the 25th Amendment, it’d feel like a coup. If he stepped aside for an open convention, it’d risk chaos with an unknown result, which might be Kamala anyway, and if it weren’t, would likely create very bitter feelings.

So the direct handover to Kamala would be the way to do it, giving her the advantage of a kind of incumbency and eliminating the uncertainty of the open convention. Obviously, this is not going to happen, because Biden might be in serious decline, but he’s not a complete idiot.
