The geopolitical consequences of an economically enfeebled Europe.
There was a time when Europe used to have diplomats and politicians who knew a bit about foreign policy and then there’s today’s EU.
The European Union and China committed to leading the world in the fight against climate change in a symbolic show of unity as the US steps back under President Donald Trump.
The determination of the EU’s leadership to continue with the destruction of its own economy is bad and sad enough. The geopolitical implications are worse. An economically enfeebled Europe strengthens Russia. And an economically enfeebled Europe that is effectively helping China sell its politically poisonous, environmentally questionable and only intermittently reliable “green” technology is both an economic and geopolitical blunder.
An extract from the Brussels/Beijing press release (emphasis added):
Recognize that strengthening China-EU cooperation on climate change bears on the well-being of the peoples on both sides and is of great and special significance to upholding multilateralism and advancing global climate governance…
“Global climate governance” or democracy. Choose one. In Brussels and Beijing that’s an easy choice to make.
And for Beijing it’s an economic opportunity.
