NextImg:The Corner: The Democrats Are in a Bad Position

I do not know whether MBD is right or Dominic is right about the likelihood of the Democrats replacing Joe Biden. MBD says that “the Republican Party may regret their good night in the debate” because it may lead to the Democrats replacing him. Dominic says that this won’t happen because Biden “has 99 percent of the pledged delegates at the Democratic National Convention required to vote for him on the first ballot” and he “loves being president.”

I can see this both ways. On the one hand, the Democrats are ruthless and don’t care about institutions that stand in their way, whether that institution is the Electoral College, the filibuster, the Supreme Court, or the Constitution. Nuking their own rules? Pah! That’s child’s play. On the other hand, there’s no obvious backup candidate, and to get to one that would obviously beat Trump — which is most people in America — they’d have to jettison Kamala Harris, which would be pretty tough.

What I do know is that the Democrats now find themselves in a unenviable position. If they do nothing, and Biden hands in more feeble performances, then he’ll lose to Donald Trump. If they try to replace him, and fail, then he’ll be just as weak as he is now — but with their knives sticking out of his back. If they successfully replace him then they have a shot at winning, but it’d still be a huge risk because Kamala Harris is even more unpopular than Biden is and she probably fractures their coalition from the get-go.

What a stupid position the Democratic Party has put itself in. How dangerous it can be to have the press as your personal shield.
