NextImg:The Corner: The Best Rules Controversy Since the Pine Tar Incident?

There have been some compelling games in the College Softball World Series, and none more so than a Tennessee-UCLA elimination game. UCLA seemingly had a clutch two-run homer to tie the game, but the batter failed, in the celebratory scrum at the plate, to actually touch home plate. Which, for the little leaguers at home, is necessary to the process of completing a home run. She was then pushed onto the plate by an eagle-eyed teammate, which is a no-no. Tennessee noticed, and a long review ensued.

Verdict? The batter failed to touch home, and it was a violation of the rules for the random teammate to direct her onto the plate . . . but the play wasn’t reviewable. Since the umps initially called it a two-run homer, having missed the misstep at home plate, the home run stood.

This was the technically correct call, unlike the travesty when MLB couldn’t stand by its own rule after Billy Martin caught George Brett flagrantly cheating.

Tennessee went on to win the game.
