In Israel last April, thousands attended the funeral of Maia Dee, 20, and Rina Dee, 15, who were murdered by Palestinian terrorists in the West Bank. Days later, their mother, Lucy Dee, 48, succumbed to her wounds from the same attack.
Since then, the victims’ families have found solace in meeting with patients who received Lucy Dee’s transplanted organs. She saved the lives of five people: Her heart went to a 51-year-old woman, her lungs to a 58-year-old woman, her liver to a man in his late 30s, and her kidneys to a man in his late 30s and one in his late 50s. Rabbi Leo Dee, Lucy’s husband, and their teenage children, Tali, Keren, and Yehuda, met with three of the people who received the transplants, including Lital Valenci, who received Dee’s heart.
One of Dee’s daughters listened to her mother’s heartbeat through a stethoscope and later said that she felt “like I am with her.” A video shows her nodding to confirm that she hears the heartbeat, as the recipient wipes away Dee’s tears for her and strokes her hair in a gesture of affection.
The family also met with the two recipients of Dee’s corneas this week. In the face of tragedy, the Dee family has brought to the world both goodness and life.
