I wrote about the happy news, and the less happy cultural backdrop to it. To get my entire quota for pop culture references for the year out of the way, I threw in a mention of Oprah Winfrey and Justin Bieber.
One thought that didn’t make it into the column: While our pop culture often portrays the parents of adult children as heavy-handed in their advice that the kids get married and start giving them grandchildren, I suspect that the opposite form of pressure has gotten more common. A lot of parents today, that is, tell their kids that career comes first and marriage should be put off.
That advice surely makes sense for some people. But its prevalence probably also reflects an undervaluation of the benefits of marriage and an overestimation of the risks of early marriage — as I write.
