I’m not a fan of Trump’s rants, and last night’s included some of his most noxious and false lines about the 2020 election. But the crux of his argument — that the justice system has been weaponized against him in a shocking fashion — is absolutely correct. The authorities wouldn’t have gone after the Trump Organization if it were the Smith or Jones Organization; a 75-year-old Allen Weisselberg wouldn’t be sitting in Rikers right now — as an obvious pressure tactic to try to turn him in the other politicized prosecution (hello, civil libertarians?) — if he worked for someone else; and Trump wouldn’t have been indicted on ridiculously shabby grounds if he were any other politician. It is understandable that Trump is enraged by this, and understandable that Republican voters feel the same way.
