It seems like every few months we get some new spate of news articles and columns declaring, “Mike Johnson is in trouble and could lose the speakership.” So far, it hasn’t come to pass, and a new endorsement from President-elect Trump makes Johnson look pretty secure, at least for now. On Truth Social, after sharing wide-ranging thoughts on his win in November, the spending of the Harris campaign, and the fact that Beyonce didn’t sing at an event for Kamala Harris, Trump declared:
The American people need IMMEDIATE relief from all of the destructive policies of the last Administration. Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, hard working, religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to WIN. Mike has my Complete & Total Endorsement. MAGA!!!
I have figured for a while that Johnson is unlikely to be replaced — although I should note that I didn’t think Kevin McCarthy would get dumped, because I didn’t think House Republicans would be dumb enough to get rid of a Speaker without a consensus on who the replacement should be. Turns out they were that dumb, after all!
For starters, Johnson pretty good at the job, he usually listens to everyone in the caucus even if he doesn’t agree with them, and no one else has enough of a base of support to replace him. Yes, with Democrats running the Senate until January 3 and Biden remaining president until January 20, Johnson has asked his caucus to sign off on some really frustrating deals. Running a House majority with just 220 members and a usually-unified opposition is an extremely difficult job, and Johnson is as good at that task as anyone can reasonably expect. To paraphrase Rick Pitino, Joseph Cannon, Sam Rayburn, and Tip O’Neill are not walking through that door. In our tumultuous era of deep partisan divisions and politics blurring the lines with reality television and entertainment, Mike Johnson is the best speaker option possible.
