A Democratic representative told homeland security adviser Stephen Miller, who is Jewish, to go back to “1930’s Germany” in a fiery X exchange on Wednesday.
Miller posted, “NYC is the clearest warning yet of what happens to a society when it fails to control migration,” referring to socialist Zohran Mamdani winning the Democratic primary for mayor. Representative Mark Pocan (D., Wis.) calmly responded, “Racist f***. Go back to 1930’s Germany.”
X users were quick to point out that saying this to a Jewish man is a bad look. For example, the National Republican Congressional Committee called it “just the latest in a long line of outrageous, disgusting antisemitism” from Pocan. The representative responded to a Fox News story about the exchange, saying, “Defend that bigoted f*** all you want. Everyone knows what a tool does.”
Pocan’s classy diction reflects a broader trend on the left of using profanity as a substitute for actual arguments. While cooler heads could have responded to Miller’s post by pointing out that NYC has long had a high immigrant population, Pocan resorted to escalatory idiocy. This is unsurprising to anyone who follows Pocan on X, as he frequently challenges Representative Derrick Van Orden (R., Wis.) to debates, engages in lengthy arguments with anonymous accounts, and complains about AIPAC.
He is one of the most progressive members of the House and one of its harshest critics of Israel. For example, Pocan recently introduced legislation to block the transfer of weapons to Israel and has called for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Pocan will probably face no consequences for his behavior, as his Madison-area district is among the bluest in the country.
Neither Pocan’s office nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment.
