There are few things more delicious than seeing the self-righteous suddenly have to make a sacrifice from which they thought themselves insulated. In this case, some of Vancouver’s wealthiest and most progressive neighborhoods are realizing that the American Indians aren’t satisfied with platitudes and would rather build big.
Dan Fumano reports for the Vancouver Sun:
The new concept by the xwməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), collectively known as the MST Partnership, and the Canada Lands Company, envisions 13,000 homes for the property, which takes up about a third of a square kilometre.
. . .
The neighbourhood groups that opposed the earlier vision are unlikely to welcome the new, bigger, denser, taller version. But there are also many in Vancouver who support the vision of a new city centre on the west side, a dense, transit-oriented, mixed-use community that will provide public amenities and also support the economic health of the Host Nations.
Best of luck to these tribes whose names I dare not attempt to pronounce, let alone find the letters to type. People need places to live, and when even the trailer parks and condos are too expensive for working families, building up, sideways, and down are all desirable directions.
