NextImg:The Corner: Portland Cyclists Hold Nude Die-In and Bike Ride to Protest ICE

Anti-ICE activists in Portland gathered for an “emergency” World Naked Bike Ride on Sunday to protest President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Hundreds of individuals stripped down at least partially before getting on their bikes. The group met at Portland’s Convention Center, staged a die-in on Burnside Bridge, and ended the cycle ride at the city’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility.

Some protesters wore see-through ponchos over their naked bodies to shield themselves from the rain. Others wore costumes and clown outfits and held Palestinian flags. One naked bike rider, Saturn, told Fox 12 that “It is electric, so fun, it’s so Portland. Just keeping everything weird.” Another protester, 51-year-old Janene King, whom the AP reported as wearing wool socks, a wig, and a hat, agreed that the protest was a “quintessentially Portland way to protest.” Yet another, Nicole, told local media that she rode to bring awareness to antifascist activism.

“I feel like I can only imagine being in the shoes of the people who are really, truly affected by this, that it would make me feel a little better thinking of others standing in solidarity and helping bring attention to it,” Nicole said. “I don’t think there’s a whole lot I can do about it, but this is one small thing that I think I can do to help support a more humane world.”

Since 2004, the World Naked Bike Ride has been an annual event usually held in the summer to bring attention to “oil dependency, cyclist vulnerability, and the beauty of body freedom.” Although the summer ride is typically the largest naked cyclist event around the country, “Portland riders have also come together for other naked bike rides that highlight and support a wide range of causes,” the WNBR says on its website. “We gladly affirm everyone’s right to protest by riding naked.”

Sunday’s ride was a necessary response to ICE’s “militarization” of Portland, activists said.
