What might we see in terms of policy from a second Trump term? Rich, Charlie, Phil, and Audrey discuss their projected best- and worst-case scenarios on today’s edition of The Editors.
Phil says it’s “naïve to think that Trump’s suddenly going to change and be a totally different person,” and that “the short answer is that the best case is we get more of the good policies, a bit more discipline than the first time, and a little less of the chaos. The worst case is that the chaos and the bad judgment and recklessness overwhelms the good policies.” Where does this leave us? “Nobody really knows.”
Audrey is focused on Trump’s various administration personnel choices, highlighting how “Trump has tapped Susie Wiles as his chief of staff. She’s proven to be a very deft political operator. The question is how she can run a White House and how effective she will be on matters of policy.”
Charlie homes in on tariffs: “I think you’re going to see some tariffs, although nothing like the enormous across-the-board plan. And part of the reason for that is that Trump will already be aware or will soon be aware that the big issue of next year — and an issue that’s going to affect his entire presidency, given its potential inflationary effects, as well as the budget — is the renewal of the 2017 tax cuts.”
