


PBS and NPR finally got their federal funding cut — long overdue. What happens next? That’s what I wrote about for the Washington Post today:
Some Republicans would no doubt be happy if PBS and NPR went away entirely, as they are upset by the networks’ left-wing bias. They should be rooting for their success instead. It would be proof that, contrary to constant scaremongering from interest groups, cutting federal spending doesn’t end in disaster for citizens. . . .
The free-market case for government cuts is often not that the government’s service is bad in and of itself, only that it should be provided according to market forces instead. Radio and TV are perfect examples, since they already are mostly privately provided. If free markets find a way to keep PBS and NPR going, maybe their skeptics in those same networks’ audiences will open their minds to the benefits of shrinking government.
