Yes, it’s true: We hate communism. As Rich writes this morning, “to a considerable extent, NR was founded in opposition to communism, at home and abroad.” And we mean it. Go back to National Review‘s 1955 mission statement and you’ll find a condemnation of communism as “the century’s most blatant force of satanic utopianism,” one with which “we find ourselves irrevocably at war.”

We won one major fight with communism last century. But because “human error — and sin — are ineradicable,” as Rich writes, some of its practitioners, imitators, and other mutant offspring and related phenomena malinger into this century. One of them, Zohran Mamdani, may become mayor of New York City — the very office William F. Buckley Jr., the founder of this magazine, who so justly condemned communism 70 years ago, once sought.

So our war, though not without its victories, is far from over. We keep fighting because it is right to do so.
