I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but there’s a lot not to like about American politics these days.

Our governments — at the local, state, and federal level — sometimes seem like they have all but forgotten how to do the basic blocking-and-tackling work for which they were instituted, and yet they still manage to spend breathtaking sums of money in the process. Both major parties have overwhelmingly nominated very flawed retreads who are decidedly past their prime. And American media organizations have turned into something resembling zombified partisan mouthpieces — without any of the charm or the fun! I suspect that the editors of Pravda would blush at the brazenness on display on both the right and the left these days. Anyone would be wise to take what passes for “the news” on the cable networks, social media, or most political news websites with a forklift full of salt.

If you wake up every morning with that feeling that either you must be taking crazy pills or everyone else must be, if you find yourself suspecting that perhaps you’re not getting the full story from the nightly newscast or your morning newspaper, we invite you to join National Review‘s band of Happy Warriors.

Nearly 70 years ago — in 1955 — NR made a promise to its readers: We’d tell you the truth as we see it. And we’d raise the level of discourse in doing so.

It hasn’t always been easy, but we’ve kept that commitment. We may get some things wrong every once in a while — everyone does. But I don’t know a single writer or editor at NR who’d fudge the truth to “win” a news cycle.

If you find that sort of journalism worth your while, please consider supporting our work with a contribution to NR’s spring webathon. It is not an exaggeration or any sort of hyperbole to say that NR’s readers have kept us going for seven decades. NR has never been owned by a single big donor. We’re not controlled by a parent company hyper-focused on the bottom line. We exist for a single purpose: to inform (and entertain) our readers.

If you’re reading this, you know that there’s going to be turbulence ahead in 2024 and beyond. It’s going to take a lot of hard work and clear thinking to dig our country out of the mess it finds itself in. With your help, NR is committed to shouldering the burden and doing the work — but always with a grin and a double helping of gallows humor.

You can also opt to make a contribution to National Review Institute, the 501(c)(3) journalistic think tank that supports top NR talent and preserves and promotes Bill Buckley’s legacy. Unlike contributions to NR Inc., these are tax-deductible.

Always with the truth. Always as Happy Warriors. Please join us — and thank you, all.
