NextImg:The Corner: Nikki Haley Suggests That Putin Murdered His U.N. Ambassador

When Nikki Haley served as U.S. ambassador to the U.N., her Russian counterpart, Vitaly Churkin, died suddenly at the age of 64. During the GOP primary debate last night, she suggested during a heated exchange with Vivek Ramaswamy that she believes Vladimir Putin had him killed.

“Look at one Putin did today. He killed Prigozhin,” she said, referring to the reported death yesterday of the paramilitary leader who led an aborted mutiny in June. “When I was at the U.N., the Russian ambassador suddenly died. This guy is a murderer, and you are choosing a murderer over a pro-American country,” she said, asserting that Ramaswamy’s plan to end the war in Ukraine would hand the country to Vladimir Putin.

A jet carrying Prigozhin was either shot out of the sky in Russian airspace or blown up by a bomb on board, which U.S. officials reportedly believe is a possibility.

After the Russian envoy died in 2017, Haley issued a statement saying that while she usually disagreed with him, he was “a gracious colleague.”

The New York City medical examiner’s office conducted an autopsy soon after Churkin’s death but said it would not release the results, explaining that the State Department had determined that diplomatic immunity applied posthumously. The Associated Press later reported that the city’s medical examiners had concluded that he died of a heart attack and that no foul play was suspected.

Evidently, Haley still has her doubts, and although she already was a Russia hawk, Churkin’s death evidently colored her perspective on Putin.
