There were a number of controversial calls in last night’s AFC Championship game, which contributed to the 3-point Kansas City Chiefs win over the Buffalo Bills that sent them to their third straight Super Bowl. The most consequential call is one that is the most easily remedied by modern technology.

Late in the game, Bills QB Josh Allen snuck the ball on 4th and 1. After review, the refs affirmed that he came up short. Kansas City then got the ball back and drove it down field for a crucial touchdown. Many fans felt that Allen had enough forward progress to have earned the first down. I actually am not as convinced that it is definitively a first down as some fans were — on the best angle I’ve seen of the play, the Chiefs’ massive defensive lineman, Chris Jones, is blocking the ball just as it may have crossed the line.

That said, of all the controversial types of calls or non calls we see (pass interference, roughing the passer, late hit, holding, facemask, etc.) this seems to me easily fixed. If all NFL balls were equipped with trackers and mapping software was used to trace ball location on the field, there would no longer be the need for any of this nonsense on first downs and touchdowns. On any close call, they could just default to the computer. The idea that with this technology readily available and the NFL generating billions of dollars in revenue, that we’re still relying on referees trying to eyeball it with their vision obstructed by some of the biggest humans on earth, is completely ridiculous.

Again, this won’t solve all of the NFL officiating issues. But why not at least eliminate this one problem if the tools exist to do so?
