Bursting through the stale superabundance of Star Wars and its increasingly bipartisan status as cringe comes a trailer for the sci-fi epic we really need today: Dune: Part Two:
I greatly enjoyed 2021’s Dune: Part One (both halves are directed by Denis Villeneuve), which faithfully conveyed the story of Dune, Frank Herbert’s 1965 classic novel, with an all-star cast and an immersive, awe-inducing aesthetic.
The biggest obstacle to my enjoyment, however, was a forced bifurcation of the narrative. It was necessary, given the breadth of the epic, but also felt a bit abrupt and anti-climactic. (My guess is that the ideal way to watch these two movies would be together, like Lawrence of Arabia). The trailer for Dune: Part Two strongly suggests that it will fill in the rest of the novel’s story with the same creative fealty and immersive aesthetic as the first part.
Given how familiar the story of Dune is to so many (especially me), there aren’t really many “spoilers” here. Some of the highlights of the thus-far-unadapted story are teased: Paul Atreides’ (Timothée Chalamet) vision quest, his riding the worm, his leading the Fremen to victory over the Harkonnens.
What we will find out, rather, is how well these and other aspects of the story are adapted. And how new cast members, such as Austin Butler (no relation) and Florence Pugh will fare in their new roles as Feyd-Rautha and Princess Irulan, respectively. (Not, featured, in the trailer: Christopher Walken.)
“It’s breathtaking,” are the first words spoken in this trailer. I have to say I agree so far. We shall see whether Dune: Part Two can follow through on this when it comes to theaters on November 3.
