NextImg:The Corner: More Safety Trouble for Boeing

Last week, I confessed to being an aerophobe — having an irrational fear of flying, though I’m not sure it’s entirely irrational since, to quote the Scottish comedian Billy Connolly (who was quoting someone else), “If God wanted us to fly, he’d buy the tickets.”

Anyway, I nervously keep an eye on industry developments. Here’s another, reported by the Associated Press:

Boeing discovered another problem in some of its 737 Max fuselages that may delay deliveries of about 50 planes in the latest quality gaffe to plague the giant aircraft manufacturer.

Boing [sic] said late Sunday that an employee of a supplier alerted managers about improperly drilled holes. The head of Boeing’s commercial airplanes division said some planes that have not yet been delivered to airlines will need to be reworked, but he said the issue did not affect the safety of Max jetliners that are already flying.

In a separate story about industry oversight, the AP reports:

The new chief of the Federal Aviation Administration said Tuesday that his agency is midway through a review of manufacturing at Boeing, but he already knows that changes must be made in how the government oversees the aircraft manufacturer.

FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker suggested that Boeing — under pressure from airlines to produce large numbers of planes — is not paying enough attention to safety.
