I don’t want to seem obsessive (though let’s be honest, I am, just a little bit), but just after writing yesterday about the 20th anniversary of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, I encountered two great tribute videos from two of my favorite YouTube channels. The Lord of the Rings themed channel Men of the West has a more straightforward appreciation that you can watch here. And the lovably cranky and ever-perspicacious Critical Drinker argues here that Jackson’s trilogy was the peak of modern blockbuster cinema, something we’ll never see the likes of again.
The Drinker was a bit more critical of Amazon’s The Rings of Power than I was willing to be (though my own thoughts ended up mixed-to-negative by the end of its first season). Even so, I found utterly absurd this attempt to come up with a list of things the show did better than Jackson’s movies. I would have a much shorter list, with one item: nothing.
