It’s been a left-wing trope the last 24 hours that the Musk-Trump event yesterday revealed that Musk has all the power in the relationship — because Musk was standing and Trump was sitting, because Musk talked a lot, etc. Here is an MSNBC host making the case.

This, perhaps willfully, misunderstands the dynamic. Trump knows he’s the one in charge, so he can be relaxed about it. And one of the reasons Trump is so into Musk at the moment (nothing is forever) is that the tech billionaire is the greatest show on earth besides Trump himself.

The president appreciates good TV and good theater, and there’s no doubt that Musk drives interest. The Oval Office event yesterday is an example. The whole thing was compelling, unusual, funny, and news-generating.
