Former Democratic vice presidential nominee and current governor Tim Walz appeared on a Vox podcast at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas this past weekend, and he downplayed any talk of him pursuing the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination.
“Are you running for something right now?” Sean Rameswaram asked.
“I am not,” Walz said. “I have the potential, if I would be given the privilege, to run for a third term of governor of Minnesota [in 2026]. (responding to applause) I hope those are Minnesotans. But no, but my goal is. . . .we just need to make sure that we have a winning candidate for ’28, not because they’re Democrats, but because they care about people and they adhere to our values.”
Minnesota governors are not term-limited. That said, considering Walz’s abysmal record in running state government, he should not become the first three-term governor of Minnesota since Orville Freeman won in 1954, 1956, and 1958 (the state had two-year terms back then).
Regarding the 2028 Democratic nomination, Rameswaram asked Walz, “You got a favorite?”
“No, not at this time,” Walz answered. “There’s a lot of them. I’m partial to governors.”
You know who isn’t a governor? Former vice president Kamala Harris.
