When outgoing Senate GOP Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told a Kentucky radio host earlier this month he planned to spend his remaining days in leadership “fighting back against the isolationist movement in my own party,” he meant it.

During a Tuesday afternoon press conference on Capitol Hill, the Kentucky senator blamed conservative media personality Tucker Carlson for Congress’s delay in advancing long-stalled aid to Ukraine, which is now on track to pass the Senate after the Senate voted 80–19 to advance the legislation earlier today. The House-passed $95 billion foreign-aid package includes $60 billion in aid to Ukraine, and closely mirrors the supplemental bill the Senate passed back in February.

“I think the demonization of Ukraine began by Tucker Carlson, who in my opinion ended up where he should have been all along, which was interviewing Vladimir Putin,” McConnell said during the press conference, where he took more questions than usual about the national-security supplemental. “He had an enormous audience which convinced a lot of rank-and-file Republicans that maybe this was a mistake.”
