On the latest episode of The Editors podcast, Michael Brendan Dougherty made his feeling on masking unmistakably clear.
“I can’t help but judge,” he said. “I’m sorry, but when I see a two-year-old in a mask, and I’ve seen more of them lately locally, I find anger and sadness swelling up in me.
“These social behaviors create norms and expectations, and I consider this on the edge of abusive at this point,” he continued. “Given what we know, given what we experienced, given what we saw — I’m determined that we never go through it again.
“I know that there are some people who think, ‘I’m protecting my grandmother who’s paranoid about it in a care home by masking my child and myself all week before we go visit her.’ I know that exists out there and it’s sincere, but it still flies in the face of the evidence of what we know, and it’s also an insult against statistical thinking.
“If you’re that afraid, you shouldn’t even get in a car. You’re more likely to get yourself killed in that than by failing to wear a mask in a Dunkin’ Donuts.”
The Editors podcast records twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays.
