National Review senior writer Michael Brendan Dougherty, on today’s edition of The Editors, praised Donald Trump’s final-stretch campaign appearances — and said the campaign’s strategy for reaching different audiences may turn out to be “brilliant.”
“Trump is finishing very strong,” Dougherty said. “Just look at the pace of events that the Trump campaign is doing compared to the pace of events that Harris and Walz are doing. Compare the size of media reach. Harris goes on Stephen Colbert — 2 million viewers a night. Trump goes on Joe Rogan — 90 million downloads since that interview went up.”
While Dougherty argued that that interview wasn’t particularly good on substance, he said, “It was great that he did it.” Additionally, Dougherty said, “Trump standing behind his most normie messages of ‘I’m going to be good on the border and strong in the economy, just like you remember’ is working great for him while he lets RFK and Gabbard and Vance mop up with the populists who think the system is rigged. I think all of this is working in his favor.”
“I think Trump is a hugely flawed candidate, but I think a week from now he may be saying this was one of the most brilliant modern campaigns in history.”
