NextImg:The Corner: Matt Gaetz Meets with Senate Judiciary Members about AG Nomination

Former representative Matt Gaetz is making the rounds on Capitol Hill today in meetings with Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee about his nomination for attorney general.

“Our discussion was on the importance of a confirmation hearing,” Senator Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) told National Review following his private meeting the Gaetz. “I’m planning to vote for all the president’s nominees, but I hope that my colleagues who have concerns about him — or others, for that matter — will let these folks get to a hearing” and give them “the chance to answer their questions.”

These meetings come as senators continue to air concerns with reporters surrounding the House Ethics Committee’s now-closed investigation into Gaetz, as well as temperamental worries surrounding whether the ex-congressman from Florida should be trusted with leading the Justice Department’s large and complex bureaucracy. NR reported yesterday that at least one Senate Judiciary Republican has privately expressed a willingness to support Gaetz in committee so that GOP Judiciary members don’t get all the blowback for tanking the Florida Republican’s nomination before he gets a Senate confirmation hearing.

Meanwhile, Politico reports that Democratic members of the Senate Judiciary Committee sent a letter to FBI director Christopher Wray requesting the evidentiary file on Gaetz regarding the Justice Department’s investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. Gaetz has denied the allegations, and the Justice Department did not bring any charges.
