At the start of his second term, President Donald Trump has come under intense scrutiny from Democrats for spearheading efforts to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within federal agencies, shutter USAID, and offer buyouts to federal employees as part of a broader effort to shrink the federal bureaucracy at breakneck speed. The face of Trump’s trim-the-fat effort has of course been Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief Elon Musk, the billionaire tech CEO who is now considered persona non grata among congressional Democrats.

But newly confirmed cabinet members are also spearheading efforts to uncover government waste and slash spending wherever they can — including at the Environmental Protection Agency.

On Thursday, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin’s office confirmed to National Review that the agency placed 168 staffers in the Office of Environmental Justice on administrative leave to comply with Trump’s executive order slashing DEI-related programs within the federal government. And on Friday, Zeldin sent an agency-wide communication urging staffers to report department mismanagement in keeping with the efforts of the Office of the Inspector General and the Government Accountability Office.

“I continue to expect all employees to report waste, fraud, and abuse to the OIG,” Zeldin wrote in the memo shared with National Review, which also directed staffers to a hotline number and informed them of their whistleblower protections. “The types of conduct that should be reported include theft of EPA funds, misuse of contract or grant funds, misuse of EPA equipment or assets for personal gain, falsification of EPA reports or records, serious employee misconduct, or participation in EPA program fraud.”

Expect many more of these agency-wide memos from Trump’s cabinet secretaries over the next few weeks.
