Word comes that Ron DeSantis will announce his presidential campaign tomorrow at 6 p.m. on Twitter, with Elon Musk. This has led to a lot of groans, but I confess I’m not sure why.
The alternative is what? Staging an event in Florida and hoping that cable news carries the whole thing live, I guess. You’ll get what? Hundreds of thousands of viewers, many of whom are trapped in bank lobbies or airports.
The choice of Musk makes some sense. Technically, the owner of Twitter is a media mogul like any other. And only the “too online” crowd — liberals who can’t quit Twitter — really hate Musk and have ceased thinking he’s cool. Most normal people admire him for building a bunch of cool companies, even if these companies rely on some subsidies.
What I think is really happening is that this is the last gasp, for now, of the “DeSantis is flailing” narrative that has been pushed by Trump and the media who want to see the Republicans nominate Trump again. I expect his announcement to generate new buzz, his fundraising to generate some positive stories, and for him to get a bump in the polls in the early primary states. It took a lot of willfulness to forget that on a bad night for Republicans nationwide, DeSantis won a historic victory in Florida last year.
