NextImg:The Corner: How Low Will Ohio Northern University Go?

On several occasions over the last couple of years, I have written about the disgusting treatment that Ohio Northern University’s Law School has dished out to Professor Scott Gerber. He was pulled out of a class by armed guards, marched to the dean’s office, and told to resign. Why? The school won’t say, but there is no doubt that Gerber made himself persona non grata by daring to criticize the school’s diversity mania. He is suing, and ONU is playing hardball.

We read here that the school has issued subpoenas to various organizations that have voiced support for Professor Gerber. Specifically, NAS president Peter Wood was hit with a subpoena in New York.

Wood writes:

I am not the victim here. Professor Gerber is and to some extent the students of ONU Law School who have been denied his services. But I take the subpoena as further evidence of ONU’s recklessness in this matter. What kind of educational institution goes in search of a third party’s correspondence — a third party that is guilty merely of stating in public forums the plain facts of what happened?

What NAS and other groups have said about the case has no conceivable bearing on Gerber’s suit against ONU. My guess is that ONU’s legal team is hoping to mount a guilty by association argument: “We couldn’t have mistreated Gerber — just look at his awful friends!”

This legal fishing expedition costs money, of course — something the university’s board is likely thinking about as the case drags on.
