NextImg:The Corner: House GOP Leadership’s Continuing Resolution Bill Text Includes Increased Security Funding for U.S. Officials

House Republican leaders released on Monday the bill text of their proposed continuing resolution to fund the government through November 21, which includes millions in additional security funds for Supreme Court justices, lawmakers, and executive officials following the assassination of conservative icon Charlie Kirk last week. The government will run out of money on September 30.

The $30 million member security funding boost would increase the reimbursement amount that members can incur for local police needs, such as officer presence during town hall events or squad cars outside of members’ homes. The bill also includes $28 million in additional security funds for Supreme Court justices and $30 million in funds for Department of Justice U.S. Marshals Service “salaries and expenses,” as requested by the White House.

House Republican leaders are hoping to get a floor vote on this bill before lawmakers head home for a brief late-September recess. If all 53 Senate Republicans support the bill, Republicans will need to find seven Senate Democrats to vote for the resolution to clear the upper chamber’s 60-vote threshold for passing legislation. But the proposed continuing resolution – also called a stopgap measure – notably does not include enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies, which congressional Democrats are demanding in exchange for their votes.

On a call with reporters on Tuesday, one House Republican leadership source said the bill is “as clean as” continuing resolutions come. “It is free of unrelated policy provisions. The only change to what would otherwise be an entirely clean CR is a bipartisan plus-up to number security.”
