NextImg:The Corner: Hamas Postponing Hostage Releases, Testing Trump’s Patience

President Trump, in his pre-Super Bowl interview, condemned the deplorable condition of the hostages freed from Hamas and said his patience with the slow pace of the releases is wearing thin. But on Monday, Hamas declared that it was postponing the release of hostages indefinitely, in direct violation of the current ceasefire agreement.

With the next group of hostages scheduled for release on Saturday, the terrorist group said that it would postpone any future releases until further notice, falsely claiming that Israel breached the deal, and demanding that Israel “retroactively compensate” Hamas.

Over the weekend, Hamas released hostages Eli Sharabi, Ohad Ben Ami, and Or Levy who were noticeably frail. “They looked like Holocaust survivors,” Trump said in his interview with Fox en route to the game “They were in horrible condition. They were emaciated. It looked like many years ago the Holocaust survivors. I don’t know how much longer we can take that when I watch that. And then we have a deal where we’re supposed to get — they dribble in, and keep dribbling in — but they are in really bad shape. They have been treated brutally, horribly.”

He later added, “At some point, we’re going to lose our patience.”

There is some speculation that after the reaction to the release of the last group of hostages, they are trying to buy time because the next group of hostages are either in as bad shape or worse. It is assumed by Israel that of the remaining 12 hostages to be released under the current deal, at least eight are dead.

Hamas’s statement today is a test for both Israel and Trump. It also means that not only is the current fragile ceasefire in danger, it makes it less likely that the two sides will agree to future phases of the deal that would bring about an end to the war and a return of all the hostages.
