I wrote today about how it’s okay if we don’t have more female firefighters. I have nothing against women who want to do this job and are physically capable of doing it, but it shouldn’t have been an obsession of L.A. to get the percentage of female firefighters from 3 percent to 5 percent — firefighting is a classic example of a hazardous occupation, like logging or fishing, that is overwhelmingly male. Anyway, it was difficult researching this column because I’d do Google searches, and often Google AI would come back with responses scolding me for my allegedly retrograde social attitudes and regrettable stereotyping.
